high school by Rakiyah Akins, 281

for the first time we realize everyone is watching us

or at least we think they are

we did not seem to notice a year ago but now we are in high school

we do not care what they think or what they do

or at least we pretend so

we peek at each other through side eyes

seeking validation in people who aren't actually secure in themselves

we are desperately trying to fill the curves of our clothes, worry if they are the right ones

worry if we are the person that makes everyone laugh or smile

if we are behind

or if we even have a place in this world

the only direction in life we seem to know is the direction of the hallways

and even then we don't know where we are supposed to be

if there's one thing we know for sure is that we are all here,

in high school,

together

trying to catch up to one another,

wondering if we can learn as much as we can through the slightest brush of our knuckles

hoping to transfer the secrets of life

but we not chambers protecting secrets

we are only flesh and bone with blood running through our icy blue veins

sweat drips from our foreheads and rises through our palms

we are allowed to be selfish,

and we are bound to make mistakes

we have so much learning,

so much growing,

so much to do in such little time.

i looked in the windows of her soul

she is only 16 years old

eyes never change, they stay young and bright forever

it is the soul they protect that ages

she has seen everything

But she has so much more to see
